Empowering women through art: The Blank Canvas Company offers bold and bright designs
The Blank Canvas Company is an art company located in Boston, MA. Below, the owner, Erica, shares some details on their business and the importance of supporting local.
Describe your business
The Blank Canvas Company is a female-owned creative brand based out of Boston that empowers women through bold and bright handmade designs inspired by positivity. As the founder and an artist, I create vibrant art with paint meant to ignite and unleash your inner warrior.
What makes your business unique?
“The Blank Canvas” represents our ability to wake up every day, press the reset button, and show up as our best selves:
-Put judgment aside (on ourselves and others)
-Embrace our imperfections
-Showcase our strengths
-Send kindness into the world
-Know that we’re good enough
-Remember that we are powerful
Like a blank painting canvas, we get to choose how we color our world.
Our designs pair self-love and female empowerment with confidence, in the form of color. We unite women of all shapes, sizes, and colors through our artwork and remind others how powerful a force of strong, independent women can be for the world.
What does your business look like?
We create original, customizable canvases that tell our clients’ personal empowerment stories. We also accept custom orders for pet portraits, wedding designs, calligraphy, and more! Additionally, we love to turn our original designs into products! We sell stickers ($5), magnets ($8), printed and hand-drawn/written greeting cards ($8-$10), frameable prints ($30-$45), and hand-painted planters in various sizes ($40+).
I create all of our work out of a small, Boston-based apartment and studio space. While The Blank Canvas Company doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar space just yet, I do pop-ups at various art and farmer’s markets around the Greater Boston Area, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. I also run two online shops – an Etsy shop and a Shopify store. Shipping, curbside pick-up, and local deliveries are available in Boston, as well as other specific areas of Massachusetts.
Why is it important to support businesses like yours?
It’s essential to not only support local small businesses but female-owned small businesses as well. Creating and empowering a community of like-minded women can foster beautiful movements. I believe nothing is more powerful than a strong, independent woman – besides a tribe of strong, independent women.
Do you want to say anything to your customers?
To my customers – I hear you. I see you. And mostly, I feel you. My artwork is here to uplift you and empower you – no matter what you’re going through or achieving. Thank you for continuing to share your personal stories with me and allowing me to bring them to life on paper. You are the true MVPs, and your continued support is what gets me out of bed and over to my paints every day.
How has your business changed or adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic?
While the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging and often debilitating, it was also one of the biggest blessings for my business. At the start of the pandemic, I had been laid off and was unemployed. The “extra time” away from the corporate world allowed me to re-focus on what makes my passion burn – creating meaningful and vibrant artwork and empowering other women. In aiming to pair these two together, I completely re-vamped my business model and re-ignited my love for what I do. In addition, it sparked many creative ideas for new product launches and campaigns and pushed me to move my business online and open my Shopify store. I genuinely believe that everything happens for a reason, and I am so grateful for the challenging year that COVID-19 gave us. It made me a stronger, smarter, and more creative small business owner.
