The smart fix: Klem’s makes hardware local
Since 1947, Klem’s has been a retail centerpiece in the town of Spencer, offering hardware, outdoor power tools, sporting goods, gifts, apparel, and footwear to its loyal customer base. “We’re here to help” may be the unofficial moto of this iconic store, which has been a family-run business for three generations.
Located just outside of Worcester in Central Massachusetts, Klem’s has weathered numerous workplace challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, under the leadership of President & CEO Jessica Bettencourt. Despite those setbacks, Klem’s has continued to keep the 75,000 square foot store open, welcoming customers in-store, initiating curb-side pickup, mailing out orders, and upgrading its website. And she relies on her hard-working staff to keep it all going.
“My employees are fabulous. I mean, I can’t say enough. It’s like every day, they’re fabulous,” she says.
And for Klem’s, every little bit helps.
“Each year, it gets a little bit tougher for those local and small businesses who are trying to compete against popular big box stores,” Bettencourt explains.
“Residents really need to understand that if they don’t support those small businesses, they will go away. These businesses just can’t do it without support. Whether it’s my business or another, pick one or two, and support them.”
